What Is Conformation? PDF Print E-mail

Showing dogs is a great sport where the thrill of competition is combined with the joy of seeing beautiful dogs.  Conformation shows are one of the many CKC byron.jpgevents in which CKC registered dogs can compete.

Dog shows are intended to evaluate breeding stock.  The size of these shows vary.  The dog's conformation (overall appearance and structure), an indication of the dog's ability to produce quality puppies, is judged.

There are three types of Conformation shows.  All Breed shows offer competition for all breeds regisitered by the CKC.  Specialty shows are restricted to dogs of one breed.  Group shows are limited to dogs belonging to one of the 7 groups.  Cavaliers would participate in a toy group show.

To compete at a CKC show, your Cavalier must be

  • be 6 months of age or older
  • be a breed for which classes are offered at a show
  • meet any eligibility requirements laid out in the Cavalier Breed Standard
  • individually registered by the Canadian Kennel Club, or eligible for registration

Cavaliers that have been spayed or neutered are generally not eligible for competition in Conformation events.
