Cavaliers are generally happy, healthy, little dogs.  However, as with most dogs, occasionally genetic problems will manifest themselves.  Breeders work very hard to produce puppies that will live long, healthy lives. 

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club of Canada encourages breeders to test for the main diseases that appear in Cavaliers, and to use breeding stock free from genetic defects. 

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club of Canada actively supports health research, both financially, through the volunteer efforts of its members, and through the organizing of heart, eye, and MRI clinics. 

Should you be considering the purchase of a Cavalier puppy, a discussion with your breeder in advance of purchase about the health history of your puppy and its ancestors should take place.  Ethical breeders should have no difficulty discussing this with you.

In spite of the fact that there are many diagnostic tools available to breeders, there can be no guarantees that your Cavalier will not develop a genetic problem sometime within its lifespan.  However, buying from a breeder who is doing their best to produce healthy cavaliers is a step in the right direction...
